Talent Trails with JS Bull

Introducing, Talent Trails: an Endeavor series featuring professionals in various industries throughout the Heartland region sharing their journey into entrepreneurship. We interview c-suite execs and founding teams to learn what experiences inspired them to pursue the unconventional and bold venture of changing the world through entrepreneurship. This month, we sat down with JS Bull to hear his career journey, from founding his first company to becoming the CEO at WhyteSpyder.

What were your career aspirations growing up?

I always loved business. When asked as a child what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d say I would be the “CEO of a major corporation.” I haven’t quite reached the major corporation milestone, but I’m very blessed to be where I am.

Throughout your career, what would you say was the catalyst to where you are now?

Early in my career, I was quite defensive when given feedback. There were several leaders who challenged me through thoughtful coaching and some tough love. When I learned to not only accept criticism but to invite it, I began to grow as an individual and a leader. It set me on a path of continual self-improvement, which has certainly increased my effectiveness.

What advice would you give to someone looking to pivot in their career?

Listen to your gut but also be very calculated. As I considered joining WhyteSpyder, I continued to have the same thought in my head: “You’ve done it for others, it’s time to do it for yourself.” My faith gave me confidence that God had opened this door, and that I was capable, but it was still my decision whether to walk through it. I analyzed the opportunity from every possible angle and weighed every risk and reward. When some of the risks played out, Amy and I were ready to manage through them. So, listen to your instinct, but be smart about it. When you spend the time to really understand the entirety of the opportunity, you will be steadfast in your dedication to success.
